Hi, I'm Theo, a 23-year-old Data Engineer, working on an exciting new project with the BBC.

My journey into the world of data began in the third year of my undergraduate masters, Engineering Science, where I was given the task to theoretically process and 'upload' the human brain. Obviously, it turned out to be impossible, without ~£100bn, but - it sparked my interest for fun and impactful uses of big data. From there, I researched mosquito identification; in particular, how to detect dangerous mosquitos using audio signals from cheap smartphones. The project was a great success, from which I leaped to the next opportunity, which was joining a startup to help visually impaired people with non-verbal communications. I built algorithms for detecting eye contact and facial expressions with competitive accuracy, and built a prototype live demo for the team.

Now I find myself on the other side of data science, continuing the pursuit for fun and impactful uses of big data, by putting together and deploying complex algorithms over microservice-based architectures, in a way which can scale with the audience of the BBC.
