Abstract

Understanding the tech community through notebooks

Who is the main driver behind the Women in Tech movement in Berlin? Is IoT bigger than Data Science in Amsterdam? Where do people get together to learn about enterpreneurship in San Francisco? In this talk we'll look at answering these and other questions about the tech communities in major cities.

Using a data set sourced using the meetup.com API and the combination of Jupyter notebooks, network analysis, machine learning and visualisation, we'll explore the different comunities in the tech meetup network of Amsterdam, Berlin, London and San Francisco. We'll discuss the technologies and libraries used, which include a combination of Apache Spark, Neo4j, pandas, scikit-learn, igraph and gensim, all through Jupyter notebooks. The end result is a analysis of the trending meetup communities in different cities, a ranked list of important community players and finally, a auto generated "mindmap" of the topics of discussion for each of the detected communities.

In this talk we'll walk through the methods used and how the different libraries and technologies were employed to come to this final result.
